Union´s everyday activities are focused primarily on legislation that has impact on functioning of self -governments, structural policy, social integration policy, grant policy and so on. Union representatives take active part in the entire legislative and policy process. They participate in inter-departmental commenting procedures and advocate interests of cities, towns and municipalities at ministries and parliamentary and senate committees. SMO ČR also advocates interests of Czech local governments on the EU level and strives for influencing European legislation and European policies so as competences of cities, towns and municipalities in the Czech Republic are not limited.

2012 was dominated by two subjects – the budgetary determination of taxes and completing the concept for reforming public administration. While the compromise form of the amendment to the budgetary determination of taxes received the president’s signature, based on long-term Union requirements,

International Activities

International Activities

SMO ČR takes part in activities of the Council of European Municipalities and Regions, has delagates in the Committee of the Regions and the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe and is also involved in the global organisation United Cities and Local Governments and in the European Social Network.



Year 2010 was an important year especially due to the May parliamentary elections and the setting up of a new government, which, unlike the previous government of experts, immediately began to push through its political aims.



Year 2009 was a notably difficult year for local government. The global financial crisis did not bypass cities and municipalities, whose budgets were reduced by billions of Czech crowns. Capital investments as well as operational costs had to be curtailed.
